Return to Life - Sakara Life
Oh the irony that I love both!! If you didn’t know Joseph Pilates wrote a book called “Return to Life”. I think I have read it 50 times and every time I am in awe of how he was so much a head of his time, plus it is down right funny how he uses his crazy imagery to explain life back in the 1940’s. He talks about his exercises of course but also his lifestyle and that his exercises became part of his everyday life and so did taking time to relax, enjoy friends, how to clean yourself properly to get the optimum blood flow, and how and what to eat. Joe was all about the “Life” and how it needed to be balanced, the body strong and flexible and the mind sharp but not to forget the play!
So a little about Sakara Life if you don’t know the story (straight from their book)…….
“Designed to balance the science of nutrition with the pleasure of food, Sakara is a nutritional philosophy and meal-delivery program that helps to fuel” everyone. “Inspired by founders Danielle DuBoise and Whitney Tingle’s own personal journeys from stressed out, deprived, and imbalanced to vibrant, nourished, and thriving………. We believe in the power of PLANTS. That eating ORGANIC, whole, nutrient-rich foods can impact your health and your life. We believe you are what you do the majority of the time. In leafy greens, but also in MIMOSAS at Sunday brunch and in the joy of dark chocolate. We believe that FOOD should make you feel sexy. Body love, in the most delicious way possible. We believe in counting our BLESSINGS. Not points, carbs, or calories. We believe in making choices that will improve your quality of life, not just your pant size, Although that will change too-trust us!”
These girls rock! They went through a lot to find out that binge dieting, or any dieting, starvation or processed food doesn’t work for a healthy and happy life. That food is optimum nutrition and “ one of the most powerful tools to help you manifest the things you want in life”, IT’S A LIFESTYLE get it…… Just like RETURN TO LIFE. You can’t just do Pilates for a little bit and say “ I did that and it worked but now I do Soul Cycle, you have to incorporate into your everyday life, all day, everyday.… IT’S A LIFESTYLE! At least to see ongoing benefits!
Food is such a strange thing with people. They eat something and feel guilty. Is it just America? I really think food became a problem when fast food came into the picture, am I right? My tone is probably changing right now but I just can’t stand it when someone is on a diet. “Diet” to me means what I eat every day. Webster’s dictionary says:
the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.
It also states :a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.
I am a firm believer of #1. But I have also never been hard on myself for eating and I do not “go on a diet”. I love to eat! I eat most foods but I also stay away from processed foods. If I do eat something processed I look at the label and try to stay within the range of 5 or less ingredients. I am a celiac, it’s hereditary, and I wish to god sometimes I could have a piece of sourdough bread or pumpernickel or a bagel! There are plenty of great gluten free options but even then some just don’t replicate the original and I rather just pass all together, if you know what I mean.
I love to cook and I love to bake! I think because I know what ingredients I am using I rather make my own food and make my tummy happy! So my first Sakara purchase was their cookbook! When it came I looked it over from cover to cover. I read the intro, the story of the girls, the philosophy and all the amazing content on microbiomes, sulfurs, water, proteins, fats and all that goes into eating CLEAN. The pictures of the food were beautiful! I made my list and off to Whole foods I went to get many of the ingredients that were not in my pantry. There are some pretty cool ingredients for sure and now that I am stocked up I can rest assured I won’t give Whole Foods my whole paycheck next visit! Everything my daughter and I made was mouthwatering, fulfilling and downright mind blowing. Not only were our tummies satisfied so were our brains. The fog was lifted and although full we were not weighted down like some foods can make you feel.
I am hooked on their recipes and to lighten my load a bit I am opting to dive into their home delivery. You know sometimes when you sign up for something and are not sure of what you are getting so you sit on the fence? That is why I purchased the cookbook. I cooked a few of the recipes and because they were amazing I am resting assured that the food delivered will be just as good! Plus sometimes I work on the weekends lecturing after a full week of teaching and I don’t have the time or energy to even think about what I want to make. This is also when I make my worst decisions and eat something, anything without thinking of how it tastes or will make me feel. It’s like whatever! So I am going to take the “whatever” out of the picture and make the decision to have a few meals prepared FOR ME and my family, that I can trust will nourish me when I need it the most!
If you are enjoying your Pilates life maybe you should get yourself the Sakara Life cookbook and try adding that into your lifestyle. Be done with Websters #2 definition and go for the GREEN, the fulfilling and the amazing food. Heck maybe even treat yourself to a night or two off of cooking and have the food made and delivered to you! You deserve it!
